The Art of Egg Decoration in the Republic of Moldova: Intangible Cultural Heritage, Education, and Cross-Border Cooperation

Abstract

The art of egg decoration represents a fundamental pillar of the intangible cultural heritage of the Republic of Moldova, being a centuries-old practice that combines spirituality with technical mastery. This tradition, based on the use of beeswax and successive coloring, transmits fundamental concepts such as fertility, regeneration, and cosmic harmony through geometric, vegetal, and solar motifs. The year 2024 marked an important historical moment with the inscription of this art on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, in a cross-border file that highlights its character as ”heritage without borders”, shared by Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine. Education plays a vital role in the survival of the craft, from official forms integrated into the school curricula to practical workshops organized by specialized institutions both at home and abroad. Although it faces contemporary challenges such as youth migration and excessive commercialization, identified solutions aim at digitalization through tutorials and virtual exhibitions, alongside the consolidation of cross-border partnerships. Thus, egg decoration remains a vehicle for cultural identity and social cohesion, adapting to new realities through intergenerational dialogue and international cooperation.
